Between the lines of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan’s media statement last week was a message that must have been agonising for him to communicate: My own have turned on me. There was a similar sentiment running through the statement issued by Robert McBride, Anwa Dramat and Ivan Pillay. They are the latest ANC members to be dropped into the comrade crushing machine as factional battles continue to devour the party. The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has also now entered self-destruct mode. D-Day for Zuma’s graft charges

The National Prosecuting Authority appears all set to announce whether it will or won’t reinstate almost 800 graft charges against President Jacob Zuma. The NPA has scheduled a press conference on the matter at 10h00. Whatever route the NPA decides to take will guarantee a shock for the country today.  Read more

Fallujah to be retaken from ISIL

The historic city of Fallujah will be the target of a major Iraqi offensive this week. Long a Sunni insurgent stronghold, the city has been occupied by ISIL and is a major strategic focus for both sides. Fallujah was the site of one of the coalition’s largest battles in the 2004 Iraq War. Read more

Austrian votes down to the wire

Postal votes will determine whether Austria’s president is your normal moderate variety, or a member of the far-right Nazi-praising Freedom Party (FPOe). Norbert Hofer, the FPOe’s leader, will find out from the 900,000 postal votes whether he will be elected president of Austria or not. The FPOe are famous for their outspoken anti-immigrant stance, and for joining Gestapo-apologists in Austria’s far right community. Read more

Garcia wins Byron Nelson

Spanish PGA champion, Sergio Garcia, has clinched the  Byron Nelson Championship in Texas. Garcia defeated Brooks Koepka in a play off. Koepka had squandered a three shot lead, leading him to disintegrate against Garcia. Koepka said, “I really had no idea where the ball was going.”  Read more
