Trump survives assassination attempt after major security lapse

BUTLER, Pennsylvania, July 14 (Reuters) - Donald Trump survived a weekend assassination attempt days before he is due to accept the formal Republican presidential nomination, in an attack that will further inflame the U.S. political divide and has raised questions about the security lapses.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

  • Shooting under investigation as assassination attempt
  • Slain suspect identified as 20-year-old Pennsylvania man
  • Suspect was registered as Republican, had also made donation to Democrats
  • Trump's campaign says he is doing well with only a minor ear wound

Trump, 78, had just begun a campaign speech in Butler, Pennsylvania, about 30 miles (50 km) north of Pittsburgh, on Saturday when shots rang out, hitting the former president's right ear and streaking his face with blood.

"Fight! Fight! Fight!" Trump mouthed to supporters, pumping his fist, as Secret Service agents rushed him away. His campaign said he was doing well and appeared to have suffered no major injury besides a wound on his upper right ear.

The FBI identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the suspect in what it called an attempted assassination. He was a registered Republican, according to state voter records and had made a $15 donation to a Democratic political action committee at the age of 17.

Law enforcement officials told reporters they had not yet identified a motive for the attack.
The shooting occurred less than four months before the Nov. 5 election, when Trump faces an election rematch with Democratic President Joe Biden. Most opinion polls including those by Reuters/Ipsos show the two locked in a close contest.
The suspect was shot dead by Secret Service agents, the agency said, after he opened fire from the roof of a building about 150 yards (140 m) from the stage where Trump was speaking. An AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle was recovered near his body.
One person who attended the rally was killed and two other spectators were critically wounded, the Secret Service said.
"In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United, and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined, and not allowing Evil to Win," Trump said on his Truth Social service on Sunday.
Trump left the Butler area under Secret Service protection and later arrived at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
While mass shootings are a regular feature of American life, the attack was the first shooting of a U.S. president or major party candidate since the 1981 attempted assassination of Republican President Ronald Reagan.
In 2011, Democratic then-Congresswoman Gabby Giffords was seriously wounded in an attack on a gathering of constituents in Arizona. Republican U.S. Representative Steve Scalise was also badly wounded in a politically motivated 2017 attack on a group of Republican representatives practicing for a charity baseball game.
Giffords later founded a leading gun control organization, Scalise has remained a stalwart defender of gun rights.

FEARS OF VIOLENCE

The attack heightened longstanding worries that political violence could erupt during the presidential campaign and after the election. The concerns in part reflect the electorate's polarization, with the country appearing bitterly divided into two camps with divergent political and social visions.
Americans fear rising political violence, recent Reuters/Ipsos polling shows, with two out of three respondents to a May survey saying they worried violence could follow the election.
Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in an attempt to overturn his election defeat, fueled by his false claims that his loss was the result of widespread fraud. More than 100 police officers were injured, five people died and the Capitol suffered millions of dollars of damage in the violence.
Trump is due to receive his party's formal nomination at the Republican National Convention, which kicks off in Milwaukee on Monday.
Rally attendees described scenes of panic and chaos following the shooting.
Ron Moose, a Trump supporter at the rally, said he heard about four shots. "I saw the crowd go down and then Trump ducked, also real quick," he said. "Then the Secret Service all jumped and protected him as soon as they could. We are talking within a second they were all protecting him."
The BBC interviewed a man who said he saw a man armed with a rifle crawling up a roof near the event. The self-described eyewitness, who the BBC did not identify, said he and the people he was with started pointing at the man, trying to alert security.
The shots appeared to come from outside the area secured by the Secret Service, the agency said.
Hours after the attack, the Oversight Committee in the Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives summoned Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to testify at a hearing scheduled for July 22.
"Americans demand answers about the assassination attempt of President Trump," the panel said in a statement on social media.

REPUBLICANS, DEMOCRATS DECRY VIOLENCE

Leading Republicans and Democrats quickly condemned the violence, as did foreign leaders.
"There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it," Biden said in a statement.
Biden's campaign was pausing its television ads and halting all other outbound communication, a campaign official said.
Some of Trump's Republican allies said they believed the attack was politically motivated.
"For weeks Democrat leaders have been fueling ludicrous hysteria that Donald Trump winning re-election would be the end of democracy in America," said Scalise, the No. 2 House Republican.
"Clearly we’ve seen far-left lunatics act on violent rhetoric in the past. This incendiary rhetoric must stop."
Trump, who served as president from 2017-2021, easily bested his rivals for the Republican nomination early in the campaign. He unified his party around him after its support wavered briefly when his supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, attempting to overturn his 2020 election defeat.
The businessman and former reality television star entered the year facing a raft of legal worries, including four separate criminal prosecutions.
He was found guilty in late May of trying to cover up hush money payments to a porn star. But the other three prosecutions he faces — including two for his attempts to overturn his defeat — have been ground to a halt by various factors, including a Supreme Court decision early this month that found him to be partly immune to prosecution.
Trump contends, without giving evidence, that all four prosecutions have been orchestrated by Biden to try to prevent him from returning to power.

The above update was made at 15h30

The shooter was dead, one rally attendee was killed and two other spectators were injured, the Secret Service said in a statement. The incident was being investigated as an assassination attempt.

Law enforcement officials told reporters they had tentatively identified a suspected shooter but were not ready to do so publicly. They also said they not yet identified a motive.

Trump, 78, had just started his speech when the shots rang out. He grabbed his right ear with his right hand, then brought his hand down to look at it before dropping to his knees behind the podium before Secret Service agents swarmed and covered him. He emerged about a minute later, his red "Make America Great Again" hat knocked off, and could be heard saying "wait, wait," before the fist bump, then agents rushed him to a black SUV.

"I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear," Trump said later on his Truth Social platform following the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, about 30 miles (50 km) north of Pittsburgh. "Much bleeding took place."

The shooting occurred less than four months before the Nov. 5 election, when Trump faces an election rematch with Democratic President Joe Biden. Most opinion polls including those by Reuters/Ipsos show the two locked in a close contest.

Leading Republicans and Democrats quickly condemned the violence.

The Trump campaign said he was "doing well."

Biden said in a statement: "There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it."

Republican U.S. Representative Ronny Jackson of Texas told Fox News his nephew had been wounded at the rally.

The shooting raised immediate questions about security failures by the Secret Service, which provides former presidents including Trump with lifetime protection.

It was the first shooting of a U.S. president or major party candidate since the 1981 attempted assassination of Republican President Ronald Reagan.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said Trump has left the Butler area under the protection of the U.S. Secret Service with the assistance of the Pennsylvania state police. Republican U.S. Representative Daniel Meuser told CNN Trump was headed to Bedminster, New Jersey, where he has a golf club.

WITNESS ACCOUNT

Ron Moose, a Trump supporter at the rally, said he heard about four shots. "I saw the crowd go down and then Trump ducked also real quick," he said. "Then the Secret Service all jumped and protected him as soon as they could. We are talking within a second they were all protecting him."

The shots appeared to come from outside the area secured by the Secret Service, the agency said. The FBI said it had taken the lead in investigating the attack.

CNN, citing sources, said the FBI had identified the suspected shooter, a 20-year-old Pennsylvania man.

REPUBLICANS, DEMOCRATS DECRY VIOLENCE

Trump is due to receive his party's formal nomination at the Republican National Convention, which kicks off in Milwaukee on Monday.

"This horrific act of political violence at a peaceful campaign rally has no place in this country and should be unanimously and forcefully condemned," Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said on social media.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he was horrified by what happened and was relieved Trump was safe. "Political violence has no place in our country," he said.

Biden's campaign was pausing its television ads and halting all other outbound communication, a campaign official said.

Americans fear rising political violence, recent Reuters/Ipsos polling shows, with two out of three respondents to a May survey saying they worried violence could follow the election.

Some of Trump's Republican allies said they believed the attack was politically motivated.

"For weeks Democrat leaders have been fueling ludicrous hysteria that Donald Trump winning re-election would be the end of democracy in America," said U.S. Representative Steve Scalise, the No. 2 House Republican, who survived a politically motivated shooting in 2017. "Clearly we’ve seen far left lunatics act on violent rhetoric in the past. This incendiary rhetoric must stop."

Trump, who served as president from 2017-2021, easily bested his rivals for the Republican nomination early in the campaign and has largely unified around him the party that had briefly wavered in support after his supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, attempting to overturn his 2020 election defeat.

The businessman and former reality television star entered the year facing a raft of legal worries, including four separate criminal prosecutions. He was found guilty in late May of trying to cover up hush money payments to a porn star, but the other three prosecutions he faces -- including two for his attempts to overturn his defeat -- have been ground to a halt by various factors including a Supreme Court decision early this month that found him to be partly immune to prosecution.

Trump contends without evidence that all four prosecutions have been orchestrated by Biden to try to prevent him from returning to power.

Republican U.S. Senate candidate David McCormick, who was seated in the front row at the rally, said he had started to go up on stage when Trump said he would have him come up later.

"Within a minute or two, I heard the shots ... It was clear it was gunfire," he told Reuters in an interview. "It felt like it was an assassination attempt ... It was terrifying."

The ongoing vile rhetoric from the left wing media is to blame for this. Even some articles here on DM comparing Trump to Zuma are just as much to blame. Shame on you all, let democracy run it's course. Sincerely, a expat South African living in NYC.

Rob Martin Jul 14, 2024, 08:15 AM

I’m happy to compare him to Zuma… steals, fornicates and whines when he loses. Oh and did I mention megalomaniac?

Byron CPT Jul 14, 2024, 09:39 AM

You are part of the problem, Rob. Biden and his family have stole millions and taken millions from China et al, Trump stole nothing. Biden smells little girls hair inappropriately and his own daughter wrote a biography on inappropriate showers with him. Zuma is closer to Biden in that sense. Both Biden and Zuma cant string a sentence together either. Who doesn't fornicate? Left wing media and Zuma whine nonstop and engages in lawfare when they see they are losing, Dems blocks a bill to require proof of citienship to vote while letting millions in each month, Zuma will 'get his day in court' while Trump went to court and saw it out. Zuma is a rapist, murderous, corrupt and despicable human. Clearly you don't get all the facts.

D'Esprit Dan Jul 14, 2024, 09:56 AM

Letting in millions a month? Do me a favour and comment with a bit of reality. How many millions? 5 million? That would be 60 million a year or 240 million over the course of Biden's presidency. I don't think even Trump would use such wild numbers (they're not statistics).

Byron CPT Jul 14, 2024, 10:48 AM

Well it was hyperbole of course and not an exact statistic, my comment was a lot more diverse than that one part. But if you need a number, the last stat I saw was almost 250k in December 2023 alone (those that they know of). There are many hotels here in NYC where they house them, and the remaining hotels have become so expensive it's expensive for family to visit from SA - so it is a lived reality as well.

Christopher Bedford Jul 14, 2024, 10:22 AM

"Biden and his family have stole millions" Typical right-wing nonsense. You are repeating all Trump's lies without evidence. Your party has run an investigation into Biden for the last YEAR AND A HALF and found NOT ONE SHRED OF PROOF of all these allegations - and yet he, and you, keep repeating them over and over as if they are fact. The fact is that the "vile rhetoric" comes from the right-wing media. The slightly more balanced (but by no means left-wing) media have bent over backwards for years to give Trump's BS equal time despite the complete lack of equivalence, while the actual liberal (i.e. independent, non-traditional) media are pointing out MAGA's complete lack of ethics, empathy, or respect for human dignity or even for that matter the interests of the working classes of America. Trump's _vile rhetoric_ has for years relentlessly and unapologetically attacked monorities and women while advocating tax cuts for rich people and corporations. Blaming the liberal media for this attack is truly shooting the messenger because you don't like the message. You have drunk the Kool-Aid, and Trump is laughing at you.

Byron CPT Jul 14, 2024, 11:01 AM

Have you followed any of the congressional hearings? Cleary not, Christopher. Here, peruse this website if you feel you know about USA politics but still need 'evidence' oversight (dot) house (dot)gov - A publication from March 20th should enlighten you to the Biden family and your capitalization of a "shred of proof". I fear you do not follow all media sources. As a centrist myself, I know for a fact the 'left wing' media do nothing but paint Donald as evil, a threat, etc. MAGA = make America great again. The inflation here is a joke, the country is in ruins, the values that made America great are a long gone memory. They can't house or take care of their homeless and vets but will send Billions to Ukraine and fully fund illegal immigrants. Come on buddy, broaden your horizons. This one really got me "has for years relentlessly and unapologetically attacked minorities and women while advocating tax cuts for rich people and corporations." where is your evidence? Or did you hear that on CNN? It's the opposite in fact. What is a women according to Biden? According to Trump? Who says Trump did more for them than the racist Biden? And the blaming of 'left wing' (not liberal, please) - is what brainwashed this poor young man into trying to assassinate Trump. You should really try reading more than one news source.

Lucius Casca Jul 14, 2024, 07:59 PM

Slightly balance media.. Spare us this drivel, the same media who's been telling us for 4 years that Biden is sharp as a tack whilst our eyes and ears are witnessing the opposite! First Bolsonaro and now Trump, there's a pattern hear and it's not the evil fear mongering right wingers..

Donald bemax Jul 14, 2024, 09:26 AM

I agree .. it's America's decision to make in the end.

D'Esprit Dan Jul 14, 2024, 09:53 AM

Trump has proven over and again that he is a misogynist, racist, liar and bombastic braggard. It's not a 'left-wing' media plot to disparage him: he does it all himself. Still doesn't justify shooting him though.

Skinyela Jul 14, 2024, 11:26 AM

It's a coping mechanism for some folks here, comparing Trump to Zuma makes them feel good about themselves and their country. Lying to themselves in order to feel good. "at least we're not alone in this, a country as big and successful as the USA also have someone like Zuma"

mkhungosenb Jul 14, 2024, 03:56 PM

Christopher Bedford Jul 14, 2024, 03:59 PM

OK "cleary" there's no point in attempting to debate with you on items of incontrovertible fact, unless you think the tens of hours of footage of Trump himself being a complete d!ck are all faked, and the handful of tiny transactions between Biden & his son in repayment of personal loans are somehow an exposure of "stealing millions of dollars" - just one quick question: If there was in fact any actual SHRED OF PROOF would the MAGAs not by this point have impeached? Love the way you couldn't avoid the temptation to gish gallop on the topic of abuse of women, by bringing up the completely irrelevant trans rights issue. Sorry, just because you don't understand something doesn't mean it's not real. Or relevant to you in any way that matters.

Skinyela Jul 14, 2024, 09:18 AM

They tried to defeat him through the courts, he became more popular They're now trying to take him out through murder Let the voters decide, please. They poisoned and corrupted a young mind, now this 20 year old no longer has a life and future. The unhinged and radical democrats are undemocratic.

Byron CPT Jul 14, 2024, 09:49 AM

Exactly!

Rod MacLeod Jul 14, 2024, 12:41 PM

Have you got some of that stuff spare to sell? The USA has a long history of lunatics assassinating [or attempting to] political leaders, right from the get-go with senator Ramsay in 1815, many others, even good 'ole Abe. The real tragedy in Trump's case is that the shooter missed. The damage that populists wreak when manipulating crowds is just horrendous. If you can, try and read authors like Gustav le Bon or even Charles Mackay "Popular delusions and the madness of crowds" for an understanding of how crowds behave as a crowd in one way, when as individuals they would never contemplate behaving that way. It's a phenomenon that evil genii like Hitler, Trump, Zuma, Eugene Terreblanch and others I can't think of right now [maybe Malema too] have used and do use to bitter tragedy.

ian hurst Jul 14, 2024, 01:43 PM

"the shooter missed" Not a thoughtful, pro-democracy thing to say. You classify Trump as a "populist" Others might say that he has policies that a large number of people agree with, part of the democratic process.

Rod MacLeod Jul 14, 2024, 01:55 PM

In that case, you're ok with the meteoric rise of Adolph Hitler to power in 1933.

The Republicans will probably bring out a new law where all people attending a political rally should be armed! I noticed in the video footage that none of Trump's supporters were armed! Had the Republicans enacted stricter gun control, perhaps this would not have happened.

Byron CPT Jul 14, 2024, 09:57 AM

This won't help Les. Having more guns around leaders will increase the risk ratio. Watching the latest reports, the SS had a roof top less than 150m away that was not secured. Had this been a sitting president they would have had more manpower, but still does not excuse the fact that a roof top was unsecured so close to Donald. Someone lost their life yesterday evening and two others gravely injured- Donald was lucky. More guns at rallies would not help. On the ground here in the US and this has pretty much galvanised the American people to oust the Dems.

Blaming the left for an attempt to assassinate Trump is ridiculous and adds fuel to the fires that have mainly come from right wingers across the world. The most incendiary language always comes from Trump, and he is the man who tried to overthrow US democracy - let's not forget that. All should condemn violence and stop blaming anybody except the shooter and those who assisted him. To do otherwise makes the political atmosphere across the globe worse.

Byron CPT Jul 14, 2024, 11:09 AM

It's the rhetoric of the left-wing media that paints Donald as a threat to democracy, evil, must be stopped, etc. - what incendiary language has Trump used? Nothing in comparison to 'the left'. This non-stop narrative of 'the left' brain washed this young man into trying to assassinate Trump, Michael. As a centrist, I look at both sides of the aisles and the Dems have blood on their hands for their non-stop attacks, lawfare and whining about Donald - the result is that an innocent person who was killed yesterday evening. Let democracy take it's course. Any FYI Donald did not try to overthrow US democracy - he called for peace and patriotism when things got heated up (this is quoted). The senate building was empty, there was nothing to 'overthrow'. He offered Dem Nancy the national guard and she refused (she has accepted responsibility of what happened - fact).

Michael Cinna Jul 14, 2024, 12:56 PM

Thank goodness for the rest of the justices - on that 8 to 1 score only !

With democracies currently being outnumbered by autocracies in the world, what has happened in that Republicans rally should be a cause for concern for all of us. Liking Trump or not is not the issue, the real issue here is the threat to democracy that is being posed by that shooting. Democracy and having great countries that uphold and protect it is what can bring about a lasting world peace. That act must be condemned by all civilised people.

Rod MacLeod Jul 14, 2024, 01:58 PM

This lot confuse freedom with the right to own (several) high calibre weapons. At least Biden has come out with a strongly worded statement against the shooting. We can only imagine what Trump and his lot would say if an attempt is made on Biden - probably laud the shooter as a patriot defending America's democracy against those woke leftist fake snowflake migrant loving . . . . . . . . . !

False flag event. A 20-year-old who donated $15 to the Democratic Party when he was 17? Come on. I suppose this unknown kid was a "lunatic left", right? Armed with a weapon of war that many Republicans worship as a right? And there just happened to be one rooftop unmanned by snipers. And the shooter missed. A bullet hit the teleprompter which sent plastic shrapnel into trump's ear. He goes through the trouble of staging an assassination, but he can't shoot straight? I smell a rat. This has all the markings of a set up. As many have noted, trump's ratings will go up. Surpise! It's all too convenient. What is worse is this now ups the ante for violence from the rightwing crazies. Violence is always a win for those with nefarious intents. Just ask Zuma! But it is a gift for trump, right? Right?? For a con man convicted of fraud who tells three thousand lies an hour, it is a short hop to staging an assassination event. The USA is in more trouble than anyone ever imagined.
