Tens of thousands of Iranian students join protests again

Tens of thousands of students, shouting "Death to the Dictator!" and "Death to the oppressor, whether it's the shah or the leader!", and burning pictures of Iran's leader, joined protests at more than a dozen campuses on Monday in the biggest anti-government protests in months. In response, riot police and militia, patrolling on motorcycles, beat people with clubs as demonstrators retaliated by throwing bricks and stones and setting fires. The protests are graphic evidence of the way students – in an echo of their role in the 1979 Islamic Revolution against the Shah - have revitalised the anti-government movement even as opposition politicians struggle to gain traction against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Iran's clerical leadership.
