Romanian election, televised personal slanders plus voting

Romania’s presidential election has entered its second round of voting. In the first round, incumbent centre-right President Traian Basescu was narrowly ahead of the leader of the Social Democratic Party, Mircea Geoana, but opinion polls indicate Geoana is now a clear favourite. The campaign has taken place as Romania faces a serious economic crisis, but it has also been characterised by  a raft of personal attacks and allegations, reports the BBC. The final TV debate collapsed into a farce as both candidates appeared to be saying things that were a lot less than 100% truthful. Polls closed at 19:00 GMT on Sunday, and we’re all waiting in suspense to see who gets to rule one of Europe’s most corrupt nations. For more, read the BBC
