The rhythm of Thanksgiving: turkey, parades, football, packed airports
Americans settled into the tastes and textures of the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday with the traditional dinner menu, football games on TV, and parades such as the 83rd Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. The day before the Thanksgiving holiday - and the two or three days afterwards - mean packed airports, crowded highways, buses and trains. It is the busiest travel period on the American calendar. It is also the traditional start of the Christmas shopping season. American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan received phone calls of appreciation from US President Barack Obama, while the American astronauts in space enjoyed turkey (smuggled into space), as did the rest of the country. The traditional menu for the day includes roast turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and gravy, sweet potatoes, corn on the cob and, of course, pumpkin pie.
