More Somalis face starvation caused by drought and violence

Reports say hundreds of thousands more Somalis are on the brink of becoming refugees after flooding worsened already desperate living conditions aggravated by lingering violence and anarchy in the Horn of Africa state. The UN says some 1.5 million people have been made homeless since the start of 2007, and that about 3.6 million Somalis (or half the population) now need international assistance. This compares with 1.8 million people on food aid last year. More homeless people crossing borders in the increasingly unstable region could be a catalyst for something catastrophic.
