UN drops support for DRC killer army units

The UN will drop its support for Democratic Republic of Congo army units accused of raping and killing civilians in joint operations against Rwandan rebels, some of whom participated in Rwanda’s 1994 genocide. The world body backed the operations despite complaints over the high number of civilians caught in the crossfire. More than 1,000 civilians have been killed and 7,000 raped in the offensive. The UN Security Council decided last year to send 3,000 more troops to the DRC, including additional aircraft, to help end years of conflict. Read more: Reuters, GlobalSecurity.org
