Mthethwa caught spending again; now it’s adding up to serious money

It’s the kind of Sunday newspaper headline that can ruin a politician’s morning, and in the case of police minister Nathi Mthethwa has ruined his credibility for the foreseeable future. The Sunday Independent reported Mthethwa spent close to R600,000 on hotel stays before April this year. That makes for more than R2 million in documented wasteful spending, and he hasn’t even been in the chair for a year. The ANC party line has now shifted somewhat. While Mthethwa still “didn’t do anything wrong” and “wasn’t aware” of the amounts involved, it has also emerged that “elements that are intent on shifting the focus away from the fight against crime” are abusing these incidents of opulent living.
