British National Party considers adding ‘non-white’ members

Nick Griffin, leader of the British National Party (BNP), has agreed to “all reasonable endeavours” to get his party to amend its constitution so as not to discriminate on the grounds of race or religion. This came after the UK’s Equalities Court argued the BNP broke the Race Relations Act by restricting membership to "indigenous Caucasian" people. Would the BNP have excluded descendents of the Danes and Normans as foreign invaders? BNP members will be asked to agree to these changes at a meeting next month. Counsel for the commission said Griffin had agreed to present the party with a revised constitution and the party agreed in the meantime not to accept new members. There is no evidence so far that minorities wanted to join a political party that channels its political discourse from some place beyond Mars. This is not entirely a joke for late-night TV talk shows, however. The BNP has actually elected two members to the European parliament. It now has 10 days to submit a signed undertaking confirming the proposed changes. The case was adjourned until 28 January. BBC News
