Putin says Iran sanctions talk premature, despite Russian president’s view they may be unavoidable

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said it is too early to discuss sanctions against Iran because these could spook the Iranians and ruin negotiations about that country’s nuclear programme. Instead, he says continued talks are the key to finding a compromise. Further measures should only be discussed if Iran doesn’t come to the table over international demands about its nuclear work. Moreover, he says there is no contradiction between his comments and those of his president, even though Medvedev said sanctions were sometimes unavoidable. Maybe someone should mediate between Medvedev and Putin?
