New carbon emission for cars – bakkies not included, for now
Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan told Parliament on Tuesday that the extension of a vehicle emissions tax to light commercial vehicles would encompass both new and used cars. You can also expect to start paying an emissions tax on your personal car as soon as September. Gordhan also said that as public transport is improved, we can start expecting higher fuel levies and restrictions on poorer quality fuel (which will be more expensive to produce, meaning that the price at the pumps will go up even more). If the Finance Minister has his way, we'll all be driven onto those empty Gautrain buses eventually. The good news for current bakkie owners is that the tax, which will be imposed on new car sales, will only be rolled out at a later stage. Read more: Motoring.co.za and Fin24.
