Mining minister will not name dirty mines
Minerals Resources Minister Susan Shabangu told Parliament that many companies had been in contravention of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act. When asked by the Democratic Alliance to name the offenders, she declined, saying it might hurt those companies' share prices. This is despite the mines operating without an approved environmental management plan, including operating without a valid water license. Shabangu also announced that new mining licenses would not be granted for 6 months (starting 1 September) in order to audit existing mines.
