Mazda recalls two models over power-steering problems
Mazda have recalled 21,500 models of the Mazda3 and Mazda5 sedans, citing issues with the power steering mechanism. The electric boost that assists with the hydraulic power steering may fail, resulting in the car having no, well, power steering. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had 33 steering-related complaints affecting the 2007-2009 versions of the models. Due to a shortage of spare parts, Mazda is staggering the recall from September till February 2011. However, you shouldn't be too concerned if you own a Mazda3 or Mazda5, as Mazda's group manager of environmental, safety and powertrain engineering of Mazda’s North American operations said that the sudden loss of power steering in a car doesn't pose a unreasonable safety risk.
