Taliban calls for joint study in Afghanistan civilian deaths
The United Nations and Nato are cautiously considering an offer by the Taliban to form a joint inquiry into a spike in civilian deaths in Afghanistan. The Taliban posted the offer on their website, calling for an inquiry comprising of representatives from Nato, the UN, the Organisation of the Islamic Conference and from its own ranks. This unusual offer came after a report compiled by the UN found that civilian deaths had spiked by 31% in the last six months, 76% of these attributed to anti-government groups, chief amongst these being the Taliban. The message is attributed to the Taliban's self-proclaimed spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid, and has yet to be confirmed by higher-level Taliban leaders. Read more Al-Jazeerah and the Guardian.
