The Ecuadorian government has successfully lobbied the World Heritage Committee to remove the Galapagos Islands from its danger list. The UNESCO World Heritage Committee maintains a list of what it considers to be the world's most important cultural and heritage sites, as well as a "List of World Heritage in Danger". The government of Ecuador asked the WHC to put the islands on the danger list in the first place, but now are satisfied with the measures put in place to protect the islands, while conservationists are warning that the decision could backfire horribly.
