Guinea’s junta says assassins sent by French foreign minister
Things are getting really freaky in Guinea, where coup leader Captain Moussa Dadis Camara was allegedly shot in the head by his aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Aboubacar "Toumba" Diakite, last week. Camara is still in hospital in Morocco, with everybody trying to convince everybody else that he’s fine. Diakite is still on the run, and the army is hunting all sorts of ostensible coup plotters. That’s not good, because in September soldiers killed and raped a lot of people who protested Camara’s decision to run in 2010 presidential elections. It seems they’re doing the same again. And now the junta says French foreign minister Bernard Kouchner was involved in an assassination plot, although it denies this was official French policy. By implying that France’s secret agencies are involved in skulduggery, the military is really adding fuel to the fire. The French, of course, have vehemently dismissed the claim.
