ICC goes after Guinea coup leader following killings
The office of the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court says it is investigating the deadly crackdown on demonstrators in Guinea. This comes after the EU said military leader Captain Moussa Dadis Camara should be put on trial for crimes against humanity. Last month some 200 people were killed when troops fired on 50,000 demonstrators protesting coup leader Camara’ s intention to run in presidential elections in 2010. Reports say scores of women were raped as troops went on a rampage with knives, machetes and iron bars. Camara came to power after the death of long-time dictator Lansana Conte. Some observers believe the army is an anarchic law unto itself in the desperately poor nation, despite it being the world’s largest supplier of bauxite, used in aluminium processing. The ICC and other such bodies are busy in other parts of Africa as well, especially over Rwanda’s genocide and the international arrest warrant for Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir for war crimes in Darfur.
