Age of Insecurity

Age of Insecurity

In a time of unprecedented crisis and when the world is more divided than ever, there’s one thing that unites us: the pervasive insecurity that infiltrates every aspect of our lives. It is this shared insecurity that we can and must rally around, in order to find solidarity and make progress.

What is your experience of insecurity? Let us know with a short video or voice note.

Take us shopping with you.
Take us into your community — show us what makes you feel unsafe.
Introduce us to your kids — what makes them afraid?

Show us how you get water.
Show us how you get shelter.
Show us how a changing climate has changed your world.

These videos or notes don’t have to be long.
And they don’t have to be rehearsed.
We’re asking for authentic snippets of your life, unadorned, real, from the heart.

We’d love to be able to include these testimonies in our project, and we’ll assume that, if you’ve sent us something, you’re giving us permission to do so. By sharing our stories, we learn that we share our fears. And if we share our fears, then we can share solutions.

The Age of Insecurity is a major new global multimedia project Daily Maverick is producing together with Banger Films (Toronto), Naked Edge Productions (NYC), in collaboration with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and House of Anansi Press.

It is based on the work of public intellectual Astra Taylor, who contends that, despite how divided we may feel, we all have something in common. There is one thing that unites people across class, gender, racial and religious boundaries:

A pervasive, unrelenting sense of insecurity.

Daily Maverick’s investigative journalists and award-winning filmmakers Richard Poplak and Diana Neille are following Taylor at the tail end of the hottest summer in recorded history; during a fire season that has charred huge swathes of Canada, Europe and Hawaii; during rains that have swept away chunks of Greece, Libya, KwaZulu Natal and California; during the bloodiest war in Europe since 1945; and during an unprecedented season of labour disputes and technological advances that have either shut down entire industries, or are threatening to replace us with an app.

Taylor reminds us that while there are real problems — massive ones — more importantly, there are SOLUTIONS. We have agency. There is power in the collective. And together, we can start fixing things.

The Age of Insecurity will show us how.
