Democrats need 60 votes to bring the debate to a close, but some in the party are threatening to abandon ship unless the bill has tighter restrictions on abortion coverage. Yet others say they won’t support the bill unless a government plan to compete with private insurance companies gets tossed out at the end. However, such concessions would enrage the party’s liberal-left wing. And at this point, it is increasingly unlikely the Democrats will be able count on any of the Senate’s 40 Republicans, except – perhaps - one or two from Maine.
