Zambia denies lack of cooperation over Rwandan genocide suspects

Zambia denies it failed to help Rwanda find and arrest genocide suspects believed to be living there. Rwanda has accused Zambia, Mozambique and Malawi of being unwilling to hunt genocide suspects, who fled after the 1994 killing of some 800,000 people. The Rwandans say they have arrest warrants for all the suspects, but that hundreds of fugitives are living in southern Africa despite many attempts to have them extradited. Rwandan authorities say that, in comparison to how Europe has dealt with requests from Rwandan prosecutors, African countries are dragging their feet. Those most responsible for the genocide are being tried by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) based in Arusha, Tanzania, although many countries, including Finland and Canada, are also conducting trials.
