Court says toxic waste activist’s organisation can’t disburse compensation

An activist involved in claiming compensation from European oil firm Trafigura over dumping of toxic waste in Ivory Coast has been told by a court his organisation won’t be disbursing any money to victims. The National Coordination of Toxic Waste wanted 3% of a $45 million payout, but victims doubted he would pass the money on. Trafigura earlier agreed to pay 30,000 victims in an out-of-court settlement, in addition to some $200m it has already paid the Ivorian government. While Trafigura and the plaintiffs' lawyers agree that a link between the dumped waste and subsequent deaths has not been proved, Trafigura suppressed a report which details how it could cause serious burns.
