American official meets with Aung San Suu Kyi

Kurt Campbell, US assistant secretary of state for East Asia, met with detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Wednesday, the highest-ranking American official to meet with the Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 14 years. Campbell’s two-day trip also included meetings with senior military junta leaders. These meetings represent a change in the previous policy of isolating the regime in favour of an effort to engage with the government. The junta has ruled the country since 1962. So far, there is no indication it will release Suu Kyi from house arrest, release other political prisoners or initiate other democratic reforms. Campbell’s meetings continue the discussions he has already had in New York City with senior Burmese officials. Read more: AP
