Sudan multi-party elections already bogged down

It looks as if Sudan’s first multi-party elections in 24 years are going to be a headache. Former US president Jimmy Carter’s, The Carter Centre, along with the UN, will be the only international observers at the poll next April. Already they say monitors are facing restrictions and many have not been given accreditation to start work. Amid claims of harassment of political parties as voters start the registration process, local newspapers say many people don’t know how to register, or even that the process had started. The vote will test, among other things, whether the south of the country might secede after a 21-year civil war that killed millions ended in 2005. But there are concerns that voter registration in the poorer and less populous south will fare even worse than in the north. Read more: Reuters, BBC
