Europeans to harness the Saharan sun

A consortium of 12 European companies is to develop a vast solar power project in the Sahara desert, using huge parabolic mirrors to heat containers of water. It intends to supply Europe with 15% of its energy by 2050. The $400-billion venture includes Deutsche Bank, Siemens and energy provider E.On. The project aims to set up power plants and transmission grids across North Africa and the Middle East, initially spanning the Sahara. Security might be an issue with the presence of al-Qaeda’s North African Wing, and raging instability near many of the areas it covers. Read more: BBC, New Scientist, World News Report
