Rape plagues DRC women

Violence and lawlessness have long gripped the mineral-rich Democratic Republic of Congo. Now the UN says about 5,400 women have reported being raped in one province so far in 2009. The global body says South Kivu province, near Rwanda, is increasingly dangerous for non-combatants. The rapes are said to be conducted by both the national army and rebel groups. The DRC has seen the world’s largest deployment of UN peacekeepers, but years of war involving Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Zimbabwe and Angola, have led to some 5 million deaths, with many millions more people becoming refugees.Read more
