Nigerian authorities plan to pay Delta communities

Nigeria is said to be planning to give 10% of the country’s oil revenues to people in the Niger Delta, after thousands of militants took a presidential amnesty in an area plagued by rebels. Reports say presidential advisor Emmanuel Egbogah has indicated the money will go directly to the communities and not through state governors. Corruption is one of the biggest blights on Nigeria’s economy, with people in the oil-rich Delta remaining desperately poor. The government hopes the payment plan will stop militants from kidnapping foreign and attacking oil installations in the region. Read more: BBC, BBC
