Google has announced it is to throw its hat into the digital book sales race, with its new project, Google Editions. It will initially offer 500,000 titles for which it already has distribution agreements and will be “platform-agnostic”, a move guaranteed to upset Amazon’s Kindle-only model. To sweeten the deal, Google will host the books and make them fully searchable. Although Amazon has an early lead (it just announced that Kindle is now available in 100 countries), Google’s move and Apple’s tablet-based assault expected in January, the platform war is far from over. And with magazine giant, Time Magazines also jumping into the shark-infested digital distribution waters, the competition is sure to become even more intense, with, hopefully, readers as the big winners.
