Regulator switches off Western Cape gas plan

The National Energy Regulator is to turn down the licence application by a company that wants to establish extensive natural or LP gas operations in Western Cape, though it will only provide details at a later stage. Gigajoule Africa wants to build infrastructure to offload gas from ships and distribute it around the Western Coast of the Cape. It should find plenty of industrial customers there who either like the price of gas (relative to that of electricity, after Eskom eviscerates the economy with tariff increases) or its clean-burning credentials, or the combination of a cheaper energy source and the potential carbon credits they could earn by using that instead of coal-fired power. But Nersa nixed the whole thing. Now we wait to find out why.
