Rights groups say DRC violence being helped by UN

Rights groups say too many civilians are dying in the lawless Democratic Republic of Congo in a UN-backed government offensive. They say the world must withdraw if this continues. But the UN says the offensive against Hutu rebels linked to Rwanda's 1994 genocide is necessary to stem the violence. And while the offensive has the backing of Rwanda, rights groups say civilians are caught between rebels seeking to bolster their ranks and government troops drafting former militants. This has caused a flood of refugees, with rape a common occurrence.
