Thousands of Delta rebels accept Nigerian amnesty

Some 15,000 rebels in Nigeria's oil-producing Niger Delta have surrendered their arms and accepted a presidential amnesty, the government says. This was followed by the surrender of three senior militants from the fractious rebel group, Mend. Attacks on oil facilities in the Delta have reduced Nigeria's oil output by a third in a conflict fuelled by poverty, the redistribution of oil wealth and widespread petroleum pollution. The government has built only three centres to house the former gunmen, which raises questions as to how they will be rehabilitated.
