Pirates who made the mistake of attacking a French navy vessel some 500km off the Somali coast have been captured. It seems they thought it was an unarmed cargo ship. The naval command ship responded to the attack by heading towards them, causing the pirates to stop shooting and attempt to flee. A French admiral told a French TV station the pirates seemed surprised that the navy fought back. What this suggests is that despite the presence of some of the world’s most powerful navies in the Gulf of Aden, pirates continue to have free rein in the waters off the east coast of Somalia.
