While you were sleeping: 10 November 2016
Obama to welcome Trump to the White House, protests erupt in the US, and Zuma's no-confidence vote looms large.
Thursday, 10th November
“Zaphod Beeblebrox? President? Not the Zaphod Beeblebrox? Not the President? Many had seen it as clinching proof that the whole of known creation had finally gone bananas.”
Douglas Adams
Eight years ago, a family walked out into the crisp November night in Chicago and the world exulted. President Barack Obama, with his wife Michelle and daughters Sasha and Malia at his side, said the following: “If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible… tonight is your answer.” On Tuesday night, a ghastly new reality became possible. A chauvinistic buffoon was elected to be the 45th president of the United States, therefore becoming the most powerful leader in the world. RANJENI MUNUSAMY reports from the US capital Washington on the biggest political upset in modern history.
Obama to welcome Trump to the White House
Today President Barack Obama will welcome President-elect Donald Trump to the White House. Aimed at easing the transition for Trump’s future cabinet, and the Orange Menace himself, one can only imagine the conversation that will to be held today. Out the back of the White House, two hobbits clad in simple travelling garb sped out into the fields, carrying something precious.
Protests start throughout the US
Widespread protests expressing dismay at this week’s election result have emerged throughout the United States. Most of those marching simply wanted to express their disappointment in the electoral college system where, despite Clinton securing the popular vote, the US saw an anachronistic voting system bring to power someone the majority of Americans don’t want in the White House.
Zuma up for no confidence vote
The Democratic Alliance will lead yet another futile charge against the ANC barricades today. A motion of no confidence due for discussion will no doubt see scathing words and much gnashing of teeth on both sides of the house. At the end of the day, though, the ANC will almost certainly remain loyal to Jacob Zuma.
Science could save Zimbabwean crops
If you’re part of the anti-GMO moonbat mob, look away right now. Science appears ready to provide an answer to Zimbabwe’s failing, drought-ridden crops. An adapted hybrid maize seed, developed by the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre, could survive in hotter climates with 60 percent less water. For farmers in Southern Africa, that could be the difference between surplus and dependence on the state.
