Ethiopia signs peace deal with rebel group
Ethiopia signed a peace deal on Tuesday, ending a 20-year war with a rebel group that operated in the southern Ogaden region of the country. The Ogaden National Liberation Front wanted the Ogaden region, which is populated mainly by ethnic Somalis, to break away from Ethiopia. The government had other ideas about that, thanks largely to the fact that the region has large deposits of oil and natural gas. The new peace deal has a self-determination clause, with a view towards possible independence. Not all factions of the ONLF have accepted the peace deal. The Osman faction, lead by a former Somali navy chief, have rejected the deal and have vowed to continue fighting. Read more: Reuters Africa, AFP
