Military junta promises to free Suu Kyi, lawyers sceptical
Officials of Myanmar's military junta said that political activist Aung San Suu Kyi would be released just before the upcoming elections in November, but her lawyer is not buying it. Jared Genser said that the regime had previously promised to release Suu Kyi, but then failed to act on their promises. A US Representative also expressed doubts about the announcement, calling it a "catch and release" game, in which the regime release Suu Kyi from jail just before the elections and then rearrest her, to give the elections a facade of fairness. Suu Kyi's party, the National League for Democracy, called the 7 November elections a sham to legitimise the military junta's rule, and said it would boycott them. Read more: CNN and AFP
