FDA: Genetically modified salmon is safe
The US Food and Drug Administration have said that genetically modified salmon, which can grow to market size in half the time of regular salmon, are safe for consumption. This is a significant step towards seeing AquAdvantage® salmon on American store shelves within a few years, the first GM animal to be commercially sold. The FDA made the announcement on Friday, ahead of a series of public meetings on the salmon to be held later this week. The FDA will be looking to address public concerns on the GM salmon ahead of their final decision-making meeting, where they will pit the possibility of the GM salmon mutating in stomachs and turning Americans into zombies against the convenience provided by quick-growing fish.
