Mozambique bows to Rwanda’s demand over genocide suspects
Mozambique says it will hand over Rwandan genocide suspects, weeks after Rwanda accused Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia of being unhelpful in returning those who might have been involved in the 1994 massacres that saw some 800,000 people killed. Mozambique now says it doesn’t want to host criminals and will comply with international law. The Rwandans earlier said hundreds of fugitives from justice were hiding out in southern African countries, despite diplomatic efforts to have them extradited. The Mozambicans say they followed UN stipulations on refugees, which presumably slowed down any extraditions. Many suspects are being tried by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha, Tanzania. But the Zambians and Malawians have not yet come to the party. Read more: BBC, Reuters
