Guinea massacre ‘planned and premeditated’

The killing of up to 200 demonstrators in Guinea’s capital, Conakry, was "premeditated and pre-planned at the highest level", according to Human Rights Watch. The rights group told the BBC that troops deployed at a sports stadium where protesters had gathered, had blocked exits before systematically killing and raping them. Some 50,000 people hit the streets to rally against coup leader Captain Moussa Dadis Camara’s intention to run in presidential elections next year. Camara came to power after the death of long-time dictator Lansana Conte, sparking hope that an era of democracy was about to dawn.  The African Union and West African economic bloc Ecowas have imposed sanctions on Guinea’s leadership, with the EU becoming the latest international body to do so, placing an arms embargo on the country and sanctions against its junta.
