EU nears Guinea arms embargo
Shortly after West African economic bloc Ecowas imposed an arms embargo on Guinea’s military rulers for killing some 200 demonstrators last month, the junta is facing an arms embargo by the EU that still has to be formalised. Guinea’s unrest, including widespread rape and beatings by troops, began when coup leader Captain Moussa Dadis Camara said he would run in presidential elections early next year. The African Union supported Ecowas in its decision to halt the sale of arms to Guinea, having already sanctioned Camara and other top leaders earlier.
