EU says Guinea leader must face war crimes trial

The EU says Guinea’s military leader, Captain Moussa Dadis Camara, who came to power in a December coup, should be put on trial for crimes against humanity. Camara is blamed for the killing by troops of about 200 demonstrators in the capital Conakry last month, after some 50,000 protesters rallied against his decision to run for president in an election early next year. The coup leader came to power after the death of former president Lansana Conte, who died after ruling since 1984. Some analysts believe the military is an anarchic force cultured under Conte’s dictatorship that not even Camara can control. Guinea’s Prime Minister Kabine Komara told the BBC it was premature to talk about criminal acts relating to the shootings, and a full inquiry was needed to establish the facts.
