20 Questions with Stephen Grootes

Stephen Grootes is not your average financial and political guru. The Money Show host and associate editor and journalist at Daily Maverick took the time to answer 20 questions for Maverick Insiders.

Of all time, gosh, big question. Um, I keep coming back to “Made in America” by Bill Bryson. It’s wry, but it really shows you how “American culture” was made, often by advertising.

More recently, I’m also enjoying Robert Galbraith’s Cormoran Strike series and am also engrossed in Robert Caro’s The Power Broker.

I keep coming back to Casablanca…a cynical film for cynical times.

And I’m looking forward to Charlize’s latest, The Old Guard Two.

The West Wing.

And The West Wing.

But also enjoying Yellowstone.

The cheapest and best pool cleaner I’ve ever had (the Kreepy Krauly Dominator series is absolute rubbish, and I once got the Pentair CEO to admit it – in public).

A really funny image of a formula one car surrounded by billboards for “Zoom”.

WhatsApp – by far…but also Quora.

PW Botha once addressed millions of people at the ZCC pilgrimage in Moira in 1985.

If I get something into the dustbin at first throw my next interview will go well.

Gosh. Big question. Probably getting married, the fun, the excitement, the honeymoon afterwards… all without my (wonderful) children.

Aisle. I don’t know if you know this, I’m not a small person.

Any member of the Springboks. Man they have something.

Gosh, just one? Do you know how much trouble I’d get into?
I absolutely loved presenting the breakfast show on SAfm. I learnt so much about our country, about myself. It was the most amazing experience, but there are others too.

That I worked for the Royal College of Midwives in London.

Swearing at the driver that nearly rode me over on my bike. And I do mean all the words in all the languages. And he would have deserved it (And it’s always a “he”).

I literally cannot imagine. I got addicted to radio the day after I turned 19.

Loud, opinionated, cheerful (really, you just have to probe a little).

You ask this question in July!! My dressing gown.

Mark Heywood. Immensely.
