All time: The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky and Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger. I read both just after I left school and they had a big effect on me.

Recent: Water by John Boyne – the first (and so far the best) of Boyne’s ‘elements’ series. Heart, Be at Peace by Donal Ryan – Ryan has a gentle style of writing I find beautiful.

All time: Boyhood – for the story and commitment to filming it over so many years.

American History X – so heavy, but incredibly powerful.

Recent: This is harder than it should be – there are so many mediocre movies being made at the moment! I’ll go with All of Us Strangers, American Fiction, and then Fall Guy for two hours of mindless distraction I haven’t thought about since.

All time: ER, House, and Arrested Development. So much of why I enjoy books/movies/series is the time and place I experienced them and the people I experience them with. Monday nights watching ER with my mom were a special part of my childhood.

Recent: Bad Sisters (season 1), Masters of the Air, Ted Lasso

A meat thermometer. I’m a vegetarian…

The standings in my fantasy football league which I sent to my brother who is also in the league. After a long period of mediocrity we are one-two on the table.

I’ve just deleted the Scrabble app after developing an unhealthy addiction over the holidays (I have a weakness for word and number games).

Bananas and avocados are berries, but strawberries aren’t. Australia is wider than the moon. A dog’s nose print is the equivalent of its fingerprint. I could go on indefinitely!

I don’t believe in any. I have enough anxiety over things that are real to be worrying about things that are not!

My wedding. It’s rare and very special to have so many family and friends together in one room.

I’ve always been a window person but am reconsidering after spending a flight to London trapped next two terrible row-mates.

My dog, Luna; an unemployed freeloader who alternates between sleeping, eating, and going for walks on the mountain.

Outside of working at Daily Maverick (cheesy, but true), I lived in San Francisco for a few years and while there worked at a sports media startup that was later bought by the New York Times. I loved the high-pace, big-thinking startup environment.

I captained South Africa at a world championship in a very obscure sport.

I’m not sure what crime it would be, but it definitely would have occurred on a Monday. I hate Mondays.

Something sports related. I studied sports management after undergrad and sport is my first love.

My mother. The best role model I could hope for. She’s empathetic, selfless, and has spent her life helping people.

Ice cream. You can never have too much ice cream.
