My favourite book of all time would probably be The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. A fantastic example of epic fantasy. Recently, I really enjoyed Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky, a very compelling and unique take on sci-fi. Either that or Meditations by Marcus Aurelius.

I’m not a big film guy but my favourite of all time is Gladiator. More recently I can highly recommend Predestination, a crazy story full of mystery and unexpected twists.

I’m not a big series guy either, but recently I had a lot of fun with an anime called Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. Especially the “Diamond Is Unbreakable”, “Golden Wind” and “Stone Ocean” story arcs.

A Magic: The Gathering card (It’s a trading card game, think Yu-Gi-Oh or Pokemon). I’m a big fan of the Commander format of Magic.

Probably YouTube or Spotify.

The plant that we call “dandelion” was originally named “lion’s tooth” in French, due to the jagged shape of its leaves. “Lions tooth” in French is “dent-de-lion” which was eventually shortened to “dandelion” as we know it in English today.

When playing a game of Magic, if your opening hand of cards isn’t great, facing northwest and saying “never punished” will result in the first card you draw being exactly what you need.

I once tried to do Can’t Touch This by MC Hammer at a karaoke bar. If I could relive that experience, I would choose another song.

Aisle seat, every time.

Myself, there’s no one else I’d rather be.

Getting offered my current role at Daily Maverick.

I once competed in the South African National Figure Skating Championships and placed third (It sounds less impressive when I mention that there were a total of three people competing in my section!).

Not sure if this counts, but a line from Meditations that I find very powerful is “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way”.

Generally I prefer not to admire whole individuals, nobody’s perfect. Instead I prefer to admire the aspects of people which are valuable. If I had to choose one, I’d say Marcus Aurelius.

Maynards original wine gums.
