Trump assassination attempt exposes the danger of partisan news coverage

Partisan media is great, even entertaining, when it gives room for rational thought. When it becomes venomous propaganda, it brews violence and conflict.

I always envied mature democracies – usually in the Global North – for having room for partisan news coverage. MSNBC and Fox News are at opposite ends of political bias in relation to news coverage and opinion. The same can be said of news coverage in many parts of Europe, Britain and a number of other nations, where freedom of expression and political debate are essential for democratic choice.

Throughout my media career, I have always recognised my own political bias and admitted to it openly. Of course, I would not use my platform of relative power to further my agenda, or campaign for a particular political party as I am completely unaligned anyway. Instead, I intended on using it to engage in rational debate and showcase the logic and rationale behind my beliefs or be convinced by those that oppose mine.

I have on odd occasions come across compelling arguments which challenged my own views and I find that exciting; it advances thought. I dabbled in opinions which were completely in opposition to mine. Yes, when he was still a feature of mainstream news, I enjoyed watching the ramblings of Tucker Carlson, and in truth laughed at the ridiculousness of his views.

I believed that it was useful if not essential, as I didn’t live in an echo chamber that constantly confirmed my bias. It expanded my horizons of what people believed and gave me a chance to interact with it, if not rebut it. Of course, it needs rationality, an ability to see things from another perspective and more importantly to be willing to challenge one’s own beliefs.

That is great for someone who relishes debate and contrasting views, but the current political climate we exist in is not accommodating of opposing views. Cancel Culture or the belief in “the threat of the extinction of whatever fringe group you belong to” holds no room for rational debate or thought. Instead, we live in a world where a guy, gun in hand, would go to pizza place and demand that the children in the basement be released, because the internet said so. Worse yet, if mis- and disinformation of this nature is allowed to thrive via mainstream media in an environment with people unable to move from their political position, it leads to extremities such as the Trump assassination attempt this weekend.

Let’s get one truism out of the way: the assassination attempt is egregious and should be condemned. To say that Donald J Trump is a globally divisive figure in the world of politics is an understatement, and on a personal level the man is quite frankly a horrible human being. However, democracy and its functionality is designed for an electorate to either choose such a despicable leader or not.

Through the simple act of voting, you can demonstrate your approval or disapproval of a political leader, South Africa just did it, hence the uncomfortable marriage that is the Government of National Unity. People got gatvol of ANC governance shortcomings and forced the party into a very uncomfortable marriage with the opposition in the hope that things will improve. Mature democracies should understand that notion as they have had centuries to rehearse. Therefore, the need to eliminate a political leader through assassination is not only pointless but horrific; no one has to die for what they believe, no matter how much you disagree with it.

According to CNN, for the would-be gunman, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, “this year’s presidential election would have been the first he was old enough to vote in”. Instead of exercising this right, this young man will go down in historic infamy as a would-be killer of a presidential candidate, killed on site during his failed attempt.

Did partisan political news coverage motivate him? At the time of writing this piece, it is impossible to say what drove him to commit the pointless act, as investigations continue. However, in a world where those who form opinion through information tell us that those who do not view the world as we do are an existential threat, there is no room for dialogue and negotiation. Instead, the response is violent, instinctual, one steeped in a response to war.

Is there no room for partisan opinion and news via mainstream media? There should always be. However, if partisan news becomes nothing more than propaganda, propaganda that legitimises the absurd, buys into racist, xenophobic and prejudiced conspiracy theories, those who believe these fringe ideas are bolstered to believe it. In other words, when the news fails in its fundamental duty to report fairly, accurately and honestly, it is dangerous.

More importantly, the victim of the assassination attempt was saying “fight” as he was escorted off stage, fist raised, blood pouring from the side of his head. He is a martyr now; he could win an election not because of his ability to best an elderly Joe Biden in the recent first of two presidential debates, but because he says what people believe and appears to be victimised – under threat of death – for his views.

In turn, these views are broadcast by both sides as the one side echoes Trump’s sentiments that white nationalists who violently demonstrated against the removal of Confederate statues in August 2017, in the US, had “some very fine people,” on “both sides”. This is the man who has news pundits in the mainstream media claim he is being persecuted after being found guilty of 34 felonies for “… a $130,000 “hush money” payment his attorney Michael Cohen made to adult film star Stormy Daniels in the days before the 2016 election”. A man who played an instrumental role in fomenting the failed insurrection on 6 January 2021, saying things like, “We fight like hell. And if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country any more”, after losing the election and encouraging his supporters to storm the Capitol. The issue is not the reporting of these utterances, but mainstream media houses defending these utterances to this day.

Balanced and fact-based, critical debate is what is required. This leads to real political discourse as opposed to the furtherance of Jewish space laser myths or baseless accusations that your political opponents are running child-sex rings.

Partisan media is great, even entertaining, when it gives room to rational thought. When it becomes venomous propaganda, it brews violence and conflict. Broadcasting lies such as a rigged 2020 American election rather than encouraging democratic participation, diminishes it, as people feel the system is against them and participation in it is futile, leading to the events of this weekend. The persistent idea that the other side is out to get you and is at war with you, as opposed to another way to take the country forward, does not lead to votes, but rather a need to violently defend oneself.

This moment should give pause and leave us to think what role we play in fanning the flames in increasing political intolerance and violence. If not, we may create more people like Thomas Matthew Crooks. DM

Pity the writer includes adjectives like "despicable" to describe Trump. That is typically the style of many mainstream journalists (whom, we are told, is where we will get the true news, rather than with social media) who are supposed to report objectively on news events. In this case it is an opinion piece and acceptable, but the bias is clear. How is this writer different from Tucker Carlson?

Rod MacLeod Jul 15, 2024, 07:52 AM

Trump is a despicable person. Just look at his behaviour. And Thomas Matthew Crooks, the would be assassin, is a card-carrying Republican member. So what does Trump mean when he shouts "Fight"? He's a vicious little man. I would say probably nobody has been that disappointed by 2 inches since Stormy Daniels.

Skinyela Jul 15, 2024, 08:27 AM

He means: Fight for your country Fight for your rights Fight for your future Fight for your prosperity Wishing that he was murdered makes you worse than the people you regard as despicable.

Rod MacLeod Jul 15, 2024, 08:04 PM

But where is this fight required? Do Americans not have a country? Do they not have rights? Do they not have a future? Do they not enjoy prosperity? He remains a despicable person.

Skinyela Jul 16, 2024, 06:47 AM

All of those liberties are threatened, seriously so, You don't wait until your rights have been taken away, you defend them.

Skinyela Jul 15, 2024, 07:48 AM

"To say that Donald J Trump is a globally divisive figure in the world of politics is an understatement, and on a personal level the man is quite frankly a horrible human being. However, democracy and its functionality is designed for an electorate to either choose such a despicable leader or not." 'globally divisive'... You are giving him too much credit. If the world is divided it is not Trump who divided it. I am glad you acknowledge that democracy is designed for voters to either choose or reject any candidate, so let the voters decide... Stop trying to block him through the courts and even assassination. "because he says what people believe" Thanks for admitting that he says what people already believe, but is not the originator of what they believe. They believe what they believe not because of Trump, not because Trump said it.

You are right Skinyela. Macleod displays his whole deficient character in one paragraph.

Rod MacLeod Jul 15, 2024, 08:06 PM

At least I have a character to display. And here was me thinking the head prefect of DM moderating was looking out for posts that are character assassinations ... but you're all right Jack.

Allrite Jack Jul 15, 2024, 10:22 AM

Right again Skinyela. Gushwell is well named, he just opens his mouth and a plethora of ill-informed views come spewing out. Hes fortunate to be employed by an undiscerning tabloid.

Rod MacLeod Jul 15, 2024, 08:12 PM

Good to know you read undiscerning tabloids, Jack - says a lot about your character. As does your nom de plume.

Scott Gordon Jul 15, 2024, 10:26 AM

Quite a bit of Trump bashing here . So all who vote for him are 'white supremacists , even the black and Latino folk ? As JB said ' You aint black if you vote for Trump ! Yes , a convicted felon in a 'stitch up trial ' , still to be appealed . He had ' official papers ' at home , FBI make a big deal of it . Meanwhile sleepy Joe had done much worse for longer , deemed to ' frail ' to go before a jury . The writer has ' charged ' Trump with the Jan 6th debacle , while some of those now jailed might go free . Offers of extra law enforcement were rejected . The crowd was all 'white nationalists ' while I doubt that is true , is it a crime ? The bigger issue is about ' Democracy ' , the will of the people . Maybe the ' white nationalists ' want lower inflation /interest rates / crime and a closed border . Or not have their kids at school have to have ' gender ' studies at school , without the parents consent ! So this is an opinion , pretty onesided one !

Kanu Sukha Jul 15, 2024, 02:26 PM

If they (white nationalists) wanted "closed borders" .. they would have stayed 'home' not have left 'their shores' in the first place .. to conquer and civilise the 'savages' elsewhere .. using the genocide of indigenous people as one of its supremacist tools ! You are right ... "pretty onesided" ... especially the regurgitation of Republican propaganda.

Craig King Jul 15, 2024, 03:19 PM

The Republicans object to illegal immigration but welcome controlled immigration that enhances the US. If one finds illegal immigration acceptable then why have borders, passports, visas etc.?

Rod MacLeod Jul 15, 2024, 02:35 PM

OK, so what does Trump propose? Anti-immigration? The whole of the USA was built on immigration - from the first landing of the Mayflower. Does he want the end of drugs from Mexico? Most drugs in the USA are home-grown - haven't you read anything on the opioid crisis induced by America's own drug companies? Has Trump delivered anything? Did he build a wall and make the Mexicans pay? Nothing. But he did suggest during Covid that we could inject a disinfectant into humans to prevent Covid ... gosh, wonder what happened to that idea. He also shouted and screamed to get Hilary Clinton locked up. What a rational democracy loving man. He loves Putin and Kim Jong-Un. He thinks they're cool. Do you?

Johann Olivier Jul 15, 2024, 04:53 PM

Mr. Gordon, methinks too much social media & too little factual reporting hath snuck into your opinion. I could go point-by-point, suffice it all those matters you so blithely dismiss, or question, are factual. Real. For instance, his conviction in the state of NY is no 'stitch up'. Anyone who understands the US judicial system knows about Grand Juries. Before any prosecutor can bring this kind of case to trial, the facts are presented to a Grand Jury, made up of fellow citizens. They decide if there is enough to go forward. Then, as was clear to the world, there is an adversarial presentation in court before a jury of peers/citizens serving. THEY make the final determination on 34 counts. Yes, every single charge. Guilty. The only 'stitch up' was the exceptional allowance granted Trump during the trial. Make no mistake, any regular citizen acting like Trump, during the trial, would've ended up in jail. (As a final thought/fact, this was a STATE case; the Feds have virtually no jurisdiction. No presidential pardon is even possible.)

Sechaba Ncabane Jul 15, 2024, 12:21 PM

Trump is a racist. 'Make America great again'. What is great about colonialism, genocide, slavery and complete disrespect of the sovereignty of other nations? The only US president who worthy of office is Lincoln. The rest are war criminals, and servants of imperialism.

Allrite Jack Jul 15, 2024, 12:54 PM

Re Scott Gordon comment. Ive tried to reply 15 or 20 times without success, so this is my reply. Scott you have presented a remarkably balanced comment, which would be considered factual by any intelligent person capable of judging performance, without the Gushwell Brooks inflammatory ad hominem invective. You must comment more, as there is generally a lack of intellectual discerment here.

jacki1watts Jul 15, 2024, 02:54 PM

A rational argument.. Now apply it to our own situation where the rationale goes "I'm not bad, it's the system.. I'm a victim of... Whites, democracy, Apartheid, ..."... options are numerous.. Just look at Zuma, Hlophe, the ex Public Prosecutor.

Geoff Krige Jul 15, 2024, 04:47 PM

A very helpful article. We face dangerous times in the world, given leaders such as megalomaniacs Putin, Trump, Netanyahu and Zuma, doddery Biden and others. All (with their media programmes) use rhetoric of some kind to further their agendas. In many ways the future of the world hangs on how listeners respond. One response is the mob stance of picking up arms and shooting those whose view does not align with ours. Mr Brooks argues for a different response - the mature, reasoned response that says "that is an interesting position - lets sit down and discuss it". At its heart democracy is about peacefully agreeing (via the ballot box, via debate - even heated partisan debate, and via talking) what is the best option going forward.

Johann Brummer Jul 15, 2024, 05:43 PM

Yet another lazy and simplistic regurgitation of the notion that what motivated Crooks was hatred caused by partisan propaganda and incitement to violence by Trump himself based on nothing but hearsay and totally unsubstantiated "beliefs". It is a sad fact that there are many mentally ill people in America and that instead of measures being put in place to assist them with their illness and to protect them and the public from the involuntary anti social behaviour they are accorded every freedom and right in the interests of political correctness and virtue signaling. Often in America these unfortunate souls express their illness in the form of violence against their fellow Americans. The apparent preferred manifestation seems to be by means of random and deadly mass shootings or bombings of gathering places, schools, shopping malls, churches etc. Sadly, it is the "American way." There is nothing political about these incidents and I suggest that if one sets aside the need to give it a political flavour or to lazily accept the notion that it was political just because it happened at a political gathering, it is far more logical to conclude that this incident was no different. Random killing by a nut case. If it is true that he was in possession of "bomb making supplies" it is a further indication that he was a disaster waiting to happen and if the rally had not presented itself as an opportunity, some random church meeting or school or shopping mall would have presented a suitable target to vent on. This was NOT "political violence."

Before making rash emphatic statements, let's wait until we have the facts.
