What I cover

My focused beat areas are: Western Cape, City of Cape Town, politics, Parliament and general news. I’ve also covered and reported on social justice issues such as land, memory and community matters.

I’m drawn to everything – whether it is messy council politics or the auntie whose water has been off for three days. I love telling South Africans about the South African story: whether it is the rural story or the urban story.

My background

I hold two journalism qualifications: a National Diploma in Journalism and a BTech in Journalism, both from Cape Peninsula University.

I’ve received two commendations from the Sikuvile Awards for my reporting on District Six (2023) as well as fractures in the Swellendam community (2024). In 2019, I was a Vodacom VJOY Western Cape winner alongside Daily Maverick’s Leila Dougan for our documentary on farm evictions. In 2021, I was the Western Cape nominee for the Vodacom VJOY Young Journalist Award.

I grew up in a very poor community in Cape Town, which instilled in me a unique understanding of what it means to live and breathe in Cape Town. While studying for my journalism degree, #FeesMustFall occured and changed several aspects of how I saw life and the struggles of others. During a gap year, I worked at a retailer in Chinatown, which taught me about business and handling difficult people.

Journalistic ethics

I believe in the ethics of truth, honesty, transparency, respect and integrity.

When it comes to journalism, I always ask: what is the truth and whose truth is it? And, am I doing a truthful and honest service to whomever reads my journalism? I strive to be as clear and transparent as possible in my journalism.
