Nonkululeko Njilo
What I cover
I’ve recently developed an interest in the criminal justice system and everything happening in our courts. I also cover politics and general news.
While I often report on political events, processes and institutions, I’m equally committed to stories that capture the human impact, whether it’s a protest, public outcry or a community in crisis.
My background
I’ve worked in some of the country’s best newsrooms, including the Sunday Times, with Daily Maverick being the most rewarding experience of my career so far.
I studied at the University of the Witwatersrand and grew up in a politically aware environment, which shaped my awareness of inequality and whose stories are told. My name, Nonkululeko, means “freedom”, a reminder of South Africa’s history and its ongoing democratic journey.
Journalistic ethics
For me, the most important principle in journalism is telling the truth and being accurate. Everything else – fairness, independence, accountability and avoiding harm – depends on getting the facts right.
