What I cover
I write about international relations, American politics and society, books, music, theatre, food, and anything else that intrigues or terrifies me.
My background
I was one of the original DM crew, right at the beginning. Before that I was an American diplomat, taught at Wits University, did research and writing stints at SAIIA and the University of Johannesburg’s Institute for Advanced Studies. And before all that, I was a cook in the US army. At the University of Maryland, my most outstanding achievement was being beaten by police in an anti-Vietnam War protest, way back in 1970. I’ve authored several lengthy commissioned reports on American politics and the global diamond industry.
Journalistic ethics
Ethics? As a journalist you must have them and such things must infuse everything you write or broadcast. My personal ethical code demands that I write fairly but honestly to my best ability.
