Several locals pleaded with police officers to let them see the remains. Some said their daughter, sister, cousin or friend had been missing for several days and feared that the body could be that of their loved one. (Photo: Felix Dlangamandla)* National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe tried to calm the situation, explaining that the police had to follow protocol and that families would, in due time, be given an opportunity to take part in a more dignified identification process at a mortuary. ### **Investigation expands** The investigation could extend beyond cases already identified, with police looking into another woman’s death from earlier this month. Speaking to the media at the KwaThema crime scene, Acting Gauteng Police Commissioner Fred Kekana revealed that the body of a woman believed to be in her late twenties was found in a river in Clayville, next to Thembisa Mall, on 7 September 2026. Her body was found mostly without clothing. “Therefore, this body will also then be included as part of those to be investigated by the whole team,” he said. He said police had gone back to information held at various police stations after noticing an increase in reports of bodies being dumped. Kekana cautioned against speculation about how the clothing, apart from her underwear, went missing. Kekana also said preliminary findings from pathologists indicated that the woman found in KwaThema on Tuesday morning had suffered strangulation. Pathologists found no visible wounds or injuries on the body of the woman found in Olifantsfontein on Monday. However, full post-mortem examinations are still underway, and the findings have not yet been released. ### **Ramaphosa calls for justice** The Presidency said on Tuesday that no stone would be left unturned in efforts to solve the murders. President Cyril Ramaphosa extended his condolences to the families and communities affected by the killings. “These incidents are causing fear and uncertainty in our communities, and among women. He said he and Dimpane would meet the investigation team on Tuesday afternoon for a briefing on the progress of the investigation. “While the investigation must establish whether these cases are linked, the possibility that a perpetrator or perpetrators may be targeting women demands our urgent and determined attention,” Cachalia said. Mathe urged residents to work alongside law enforcement, saying that solving the killings required a joint effort rather than criticism and outrage directed at the police. While acknowledging the devastating and tragic impact of the recent killings, she pointed to recent arrests and convictions as evidence that law enforcement officials were prioritising and making progress in gender-based violence cases.
