THE READINESS REPORT

Watch – Redi Tlhabi has advice for America’s new ambassador to South Africa

In this solo episode of The Readiness Report, Redi Tlhabi discusses newly appointed US Ambassador to South Africa, Leo Brent Bozell III, and the recent rebuke from Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola. Drawing on her own experience of living abroad, from the United States to London, she offers four tips on what it means to enter a new society as a guest, why understanding local sensitivities matters, and how diplomacy can unravel when those lessons are ignored.

You premise your argument that as a white man I might be supporting Bozell because he is a white man! I do support Bozell, on his comments because I agree with all of them not because he is a white man, just as I supported ambassador Brigety when he commented on the Lady R Russian ship that slipped in and out of Simonstown under the cover of darkness. I supported Brigety because i agreed with his comments and as we know Brigety is a black man. I too hold our constitution as sacrosanct.

Redi, I have long been a fan and I always listen when you speak, but I was a bit peeved about the way you seem to imply that people who support Bozell are necessarily, and exclusively, White. There are many, many Whites in SA who feel exactly the same way as you do about the US and Bozell's sickening disregard for and denial of our hard-won democracy. And I think it's simplistic to assume that there are no Blacks that are taken in by their brazen behaviour.

Stop using race as a means of defining identity politics, race has nothing to do with it. Our courts ruled and anyone is free to disagree with them look no further as the plethora of legal teams defending our former state president. Your outrage smacks of hypocrisy given that your outrage is selective and targeted. Right or wrong those are his opinions live with it and rather focus on things that really count
