Adopting a Guide Dog in South Africa
Becoming a guide dog handler takes preparation and dedication. In South Africa, handlers begin with cane training before they’re matched with a dog. Hentie’s path started at Optima College, where he became the first student to be referred to the Johannesburg branch of the South African Guide-Dogs Association. Since then, he’s shared his life with five exceptional dogs, each with their own quirks and strengths.
Today, Hentie’s perfect match is Maverick, a Labrador who first caught his wife’s attention in a calendar photo, wearing sunglasses. Much like in the 1986 classic, Top Gun, Maverick the guide dog is a fluffy version of the fearless protagonist.
“He has a big personality and a big heart,” says Hentie. “He’s become a bit of a celebrity at work. Everyone loves him.” Trained to navigate everything from crowded corridors to military bases, Maverick helps Hentie move through life with confidence.

Living with a Guide Dog
It’s a full-time partnership. “From the moment we wake up, Maverick is alert and ready,” Hentie explains. Whether heading to the base or walking through town, Maverick’s calm, focused presence helps Hentie avoid obstacles and handle life’s unexpected moments.
In the structured environment of the Air Force, Maverick is both mascot and team member. “He’s part of the crew,” Hentie smiles. “He knows the routine, and he’s always by my side. The guys respect him because they know he’s doing a serious job.”
How to Interact with a Guide Dog
If you see any assistance dog, like Maverick, remember not to distract them. “Don’t pet or call them,” Hentie advises. “They’re working, even if they look relaxed.” Always ask the handler before approaching. However, spotting a guide dog alone could mean their handler needs help. “Immediately contact emergency services or nearby security,” says Hentie. “That dog would never leave their person unless something’s wrong.”
