Meet Aneesa Adams, born in Hillbrow at the Florence Nightingale Hospital (back in 1994 when it was still a hospital), she’s a Jozi girl through and through. Think “millennial brewed in a Nineties pot, with Gen Z flair and a dash of boomer charm”. Part storyteller, music lover and city whisperer, she’s bringing Jozi’s pulse straight to our readers, with flair.

Bridge to Terabithia/Bollywood movie: Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

The Great British Bake Off. Recently: We Were Liars (the plot twist I never ever saw coming).

What is the most random thing you’ve ordered online?

A Ring camera to watch my cat, but only because it was on sale.

What is the last thing on your phone that you took a screenshot of?

A QR code to claim my free smoothie at Kauai.

What app do you spend the most time on?

IG and WhatsApp and now TikTok (follow me).

What’s your favourite piece of trivia?

The end of a shoelace string is called an aglet.

What’s the weirdest superstition you secretly believe in?

Having your shoes turned upside down is bad luck.

If you could relive one specific experience, what would it be?

My 22nd birthday – what a time to be alive.

Window seat or aisle seat?

Aisle.

If you could live as someone else for the day, who would it be and why?

Tough one, but it would have to be my queen, Cleopatra – ruling an empire, defying expectations and shaping history in a man’s world.

I think she’d be fun company and an absolute strategist.

Career highlight?

Maybe a bit biased but finally working for Daily Maverick, especially for the newly established Joburg bureau – I do love Jozi, after all.

What are people always surprised to learn about you?

I’m older than I look – 1994 born-free babies… we still look good.

You’ve just been arrested. What crime were you likely to have committed?

Maybe stalking but more investigative, lol.

If you weren’t working in your current role, what industry would you be in?

Fashion, darling.

What is the most-worn item in your wardrobe?

My Air Force 1s, black silk pants that go with everything for every season.

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

Someone once told me, “Just take care of you.” It stuck.

Describe yourself in three words?

Funny, eccentric, OTT doll.

Name one person you admire?

Shout out to my mom.

What’s your current guilty pleasure?

Watching old seasons of the Great British Bake Off (before Prue Leith entered the scene).
